We are a unit that works as one team with a single purpose; to build the the best digital banking solution for both mobile and web.

Handelsbanken's digital unit is established as a modern, agile organization, with ambitions to set a new standard for customer experience in digital banking and deliver leading mobile and online banking solutions to the Norwegian retail market. To succeed in this, we are now looking for two strong backend engineers with a solid foundation in Java development and a security interest who can ensure the robustness of our digital solution.

We have ambitious goals, work at a fast pace with lots of energy, and the entire bank is fully invested in the success of the digital leap being taken. What will your responsibilities be as a Sr. Backend Engineer?

As a Sr. Backend Engineer, you will work with a team of Designers, Product Owners, DevOps Experts, and fellow Backend and Frontend Engineers to create amazing digital experiences.

Your day-to-day will consist of finding the best solutions to meet our business goals in a modern, agile work environment, taking ownership and pride in writing secure, well-crafted and tested code. You will be joining a team that has just built a new banking application from scratch, integrating with the existing core banking system.

As we are a new digital unit within the bank, you will also get to think creatively and continuously evolve the development process and ways of working by actively participating in planning and retrospectives. We also want you to take on responsibility for writing secure code, and potentially act as a security champion influencing other developers.

To thrive as a Sr. Backend Engineer with us, we imagine that you are someone with a product acumen, high attention to detail, and quality. For these specific roles we are also looking for someone with a security interest who can take responsibility for secure code and development processes and work proactively in this area. You also need to be able to collaborate with agile product owners to refine requirements and break these down into tasks, and this takes strong communication and collaboration skills.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is motivated by making a positive impact in a traditional industry together with the rest of our team. We are building a brand new digital banking application that is transformative to Handelsbanken, and we want you to take ownership of this journey.

We would love to hear from you if you have the following qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience as a Backend Engineer
• Hands-on experience building scalable, cloud-native applications with Java or Kotlin
• Experience defining interface contracts and working with REST APIs
• Experience building and maintaining comprehensive test suites
• Advocacy of modern development methodology ("you build it, you own it")
• Experience in a cross-functional, full-stack setup with end-to-end feature delivery (joint squads combining product, backend, frontend, quality engineering and testing)
• BSc or MSc in a technology-related field (solid relevant experience can compensate for education)
• Experience from an industry where security is a focus, preferably having taken on extra responsibilities in secure development

It would also be great if you have experience:

• Using Infrastructure-as-Code
• Working with Microsoft Azure
• Setting up CI/CD pipelines or other DevOps infrastructure (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins)
• Working in event-driven/real-time architectures (using e.g., Kafka, Spark, RabbitMQ)
