Our product development team needs a new Marte!

Big words and big aspirations! But who are we really, underneath those lofty promises and corporate phrases? Meet Marte, senior software engineer in our Products team.

 

Marte joined Cegal all the way back in 2017 as a software engineer and has been a huge contributor to our product development team ever since. When it comes to software engineering, her expertise has become developing a hybrid Python-C# system that exposes geoscientific data to end users in a straightforward way. Working with geoscientific data and applications adds an exciting layer to our work – after all you can’t change the laws of physics and need to understand the industry applications we are working with.

 

Because this system can be deployed on-prem or distributed across the cloud, she has also become a core part of the team handling our messaging system written in Go and using gRPC as a transport. But what sets her apart now wasn’t what landed her the job in the first place.

 

 “Marte quickly stood out to us, not just because of her ability to deal with the complexities of working with real-world large numerical data, her engineering degree or technical skills in C# and python – but because of her genuine interest in the field we are working in, how she was able to highlight her ability and her willingness to learn, explore new technologies and foster collaboration with colleagues in different disciplines”, remembers James Goldwater, Software Engineering Manager.


Those abilities have proven to be crucial to her success in Cegal.


 “As a software engineer in Cegal, I am part of a small, autonomous and highly capable team – where close collaboration is key. Whether it’s with people in my team sitting close by, the rest of the team in Oslo and Stavanger, or other colleagues around the world – sharing perspectives, getting expert advice and providing guidance to others is a big part of my working week, and one of my favorite parts.”, says Marte.

 

 Working in a small team within a large organization has many upsides but has its challenges too. “Although my biggest strengths are in C# and Python, I often get involved in other parts of the development process too. Being a specialist is good, but we all need a broad set of skills and the willingness to assist where we can,” she says.

 

 “Working in Cegal has taught me to challenge myself and forced me to take on tasks and tackle technologies outside of my comfort zone. Today – I’m very glad I was encouraged to do so, and excited to see how far I’ve come.”

 

Throughout her time at Cegal, Marte has been not just a great engineer – she is someone who has made us, our culture and most importantly our customers better and happier! We’re all the better for having Marte with us, and she has been happy to be here: "My time spent at Cegal has been amazing. Sadly, Marte is moving on to other opportunities. While we enthusiastically cheer her on – we are also keen to find a new Marte to join our team! Of course, being called Marte is not a requirement – it could be something else entirely. You could be a Lars, Amrita, or Juan! The key thing is to be another positive and enthusiastic contributor to our close-knit team!
