The team you will be joining

The Department of Medical Genetics is a leading provider of healthcare services to patients and families with genetic diseases. Our Genome Diagnostics Unit is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for short-read sequencing. We handle extensive human sequence data, operating high-quality, efficient analysis pipelines accredited under ISO 15189:2022. Concurrently, we develop and implement advanced open-source tools, testing and evaluating new methods for faster, more accurate diagnostics. As our operations expand in volume and complexity, we face growing demands for robust system architecture, automation, and scalable decision support.

The Unit for Genome Diagnostics currently employs 27 people, conducting work in multidisciplinary teams involving technical lab personnel, bioinformaticians, and developers. We are increasingly focused on national collaboration and harmonization, leveraging our extensive Nordic network. Some of our current open-source projects include ELLA, an advanced web-based application which streamlines the process of identifying disease-causing genetic variants, and Maestro, a library for workflow automation.

Role and responsibilities

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic colleague who can take the lead in prototyping the optimal setup of a cloud-based infrastructure for future operations. Our aim is to create a cloud-based platform which can facilitate collaborative development and testing of pipelines and applications within our field. Further, we want to establish a proof-of-concept production environment where we can explore how to best leverage the cloud for large-scale secure genomic analyses. Working closely with both operations specialists and development projects, this is how you will spend your days:

  • Establish and configure a new cloud-based development environment and testbed tailored for scientific workloads and applications and large-scale genomics analyses.
  • Document and visualize high-level architecture, contribute to knowledge sharing and provide expert advice.
  • Implement best practice security principles and explore additional measures to protect sensitive health data in cloud environments.
  • DevOps management of our current platforms.

Qualifications

  • Master’s or PhD in computer science or a related field. Long and relevant experience can compensate for the lack of a formal degree.
  • Solid experience with software engineering on Linux-based platforms.
  • Experience with cloud service platforms and their configuration.
  • Proficiency with containers and knowledge of container orchestration, network concepts, security best practices, and CI/CD tools and platforms.
  • Excellent English skills, and an understanding of Norwegian as a minimum.
  • Experience with quality management, testing, and documentation under ISO standards is an advantage.

Qualities we are looking for

  • Enthusiasm, determination, and strong execution skills.
  • Team-oriented with a commitment to shared goals and priorities.
  • Aptitude for understanding complex issues and collaborating across disciplines.
  • A passion for continuous improvement and professional development.
